Clare Shepherd is an artist who lives and works on The Cranborne Chase in Dorset. She studied at Somerset College of Arts and Technology and The Slade School of Fine Art where she was The Slade Prizewinner for her graduating year. She exhibits in Dorset on a regular basis and further afield usually once every two years (London and Exmoor). Clare taught for the Dorset Adult Education Service and Bath University for many years but now she runs courses and classes privately, including some e-learning (email for details), and a vibrant summer school. Clare considers her teaching an important part of her career and has very clear ideas on how and what to teach.

Clare has a private gallery at home, please email for details and to make an appointment to visit.

Wherever Clare travels she sketches, photographs and generally investigates the landscapes.

“I don’t feel I know a place until I’ve experienced the countryside and its rural places.”

“I’m always searching for a view with a far horizon and a good foreground reference”

“I collect my sketches and sketchbooks. I ‘bank’ them in order to ‘withdraw’ information from them when I’m in my studio”

Exmoor visit:

“I have been on Exmoor again, sketching in the wind and rain, preparing for an exhibition in November 2022 at Lanacre Barn Gallery”

“My muse is Exmoor National Park, near where I grew up and a place in which I spend time every year.”

“I work with both watercolour and with oil paint. I aim to find the balance between the expressive quality of my medium and a clear description of my subject.”
